Little Crum Creek Park a Great Second "Goals in Gardens" Venue

On September 11, under the prettiest of brilliant blue skies and puffy white clouds, Chester Upland Youth Soccer enjoyed its second “Goals in Gardens” outing.

This time, the venue was Little Crum Creek Park, a hidden treasure located at the intersections of Cresson Ave and Columbia Ave in Swarthmore (and also accessible on foot or bicycle from Yale Ave where there is no parking.) Beyond the green space, gazebo and fireplace visible from the road, visitors can follow the path to a well-attended meadow, and cross two delightful footbridges over a healthy stream that is accessible for exploration and water play.

There was plenty of room in the meadow for soccer fun far from the roadways, with nearby shaded picnic tables where parents could comfortably watch the action . Participating children also enjoyed the Swarthmore’s Storybook Walk, through which a children’s picture book is displayed page by page in permanent installations along the path beginning at Cresson Ave. The book changes several times a year.

To encourage literacy, exercise, and a connection to nature the concept of the Storybook Walk was created by Anne Ferguson, a librarian in Montpelier, Vermont. Swarthmore’s Storybook Walk is brought to you by the Swarthmore Public Library with help from the Swarthmore Environmental Advisory Council, Swarthmore Borough, Swarthmore Public Works, Swarthmore Trailblazers 4-H Club, and the Friends of the Swarthmore Public Library.

Volunteers and other supporters are encouraged to help keep up the maintenance of this beautiful park. All are welcome to show up (with garden gloves, ideally) on the second Saturday of each month at 10AM to help work on projects. Donations to Friends of Little Crum Creek Park, a 501(c)(3C), can be made by mailing a check to PO Box 107, Swarthmore, PA 19081.
