Union Player Pathway a Possibility for CUYS Stars
The Philadelphia Union’s new community outreach initiative, led by Human Resources executive Nigel Burch, will offer many exciting opportunities to Chester residents. Movie nights and other fun gatherings are in the process of being planned and promoted via the Chester City Facebook page.
This past weekend, however, may be the favorite of all the offerings for five Chester Upland Youth Soccer players who were given a special chance to try out for the Union’s prestigious Player Pathway Program.
The PPP provides professional training for youth players who aspire to train and compete like the pros. This supplemental development training takes place in a player-centered learning environment, and is part of the identification program for the Union Academy.
Josiah Jones and Rome Barrett-Wilson were two of five CUYS players who participated in this weekend’s PPP tryout. CUYS leadership expected that Josiah’s strong shot and Rome’s speedy moves would impress the evaluators.
“They had us pass the ball between the cones really fast,” Rome remembered.
Josiah’s favorite part was the game at the end when three mini-teams competed in round-robin play, with the first team to be scored on three times taking a break from the field. “I would definitely want to go back if I can,” said Josiah.
Even if they don’t get the opportunity to continue with the Union PPP, each of the CUYS players will continue to enjoy after-school and weekend programming through Chester Upland Youth Soccer - and cheering on the Union through their complimentary ticket program, too.
“Community, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the Philadelphia Union’s core values. From our executives to the front office staff, we are committed to being present in the community and trying to make a difference in the lives of the residents of Chester,” commented Burch.
