april 2022 meeting highlights
This meeting’s speakers, Will Nord of Willows Park Preserve and Liesl Mahoney and Kaitlin LeRoy of Brandywine Museum of Art, introduced opportunities to connect Chester youth with great DelCo destinations, live and virtual.
Willows Park Preserve consists of a mansion and lovely wooded and open grounds, making it a wonderful place for a group gathering of any sort. The non-profit led by Will Nord (reachable at willnord@willowsparkpreserve.org) has already hosted concerts, fishing lessons, fitness classes, gardening presentations and 4-H events. Brandywine Museum of Art celebrates the intersection of art and nature, and welcomes non-profit groups to apply for a community pass that will allow group members to experience its trails, landscapes and related art at no charge. Also, on the first Sunday of each month, admission is waived and all are welcome to enjoy performances, art projects and tours from 9:30am-2pm. The museum also has special programming on Thursdays in July and interactive virtual tours on its website.
Chester’s Mentoring Initiative members also shared exciting plans for summer fun and productivity:
Making a Change will offer families weekly summer evening activities in a local park.
Chester Education Foundation is preparing to start its Summer Step work program for ages 16-18.
Andrew L Hicks Foundation will host a Learn to Skate program for grades 3-8 on May 1, and will take kids to summer camp from August 7-11.
Boys & Girls Club of Chester will soon take registrations for summer camp, and before/after-care, and welcomes partnerships with anyone able to provide activities and enrichments.
DelCo Iotas extended its scholarship application deadline to May 1, while Media Fellowship House Scholarship’s registration deadline is April 17.
Child Guidance Resource Center encourages everyone to register to vote by the May 17 primary election, and to attend Delco Area Resource Network meetings on the second Tuesday of each month. Gerry Gonzalez can bring voter registration materials to events upon request to ggonzalez@cgrc.org
A number of Chester organizations are working together to produce a career and resources fair on May 21 at Chester High School. All are welcome to introduce their services.
