Chester's Mentoring Initiative Celebrates First Anniversary

November marks the first anniversary of Chester’s Mentoring Initiative, a group of over 100 organizations and individuals who meet by Zoom monthly to hear relevant presentations, engage in productive discussions and exchange “superpowers” for the benefit of the children and families served.

CMI co-founder Jamar Daniels of Amachi Chester wrote the group’s mission: To come together to collectively respond to the community’s needs with quality programming that provides access to positive health, education, and economic outcomes.

Chester Upland Youth Soccer was also a founding partner of the group and helps to coordinate the speakers and the web presence, which can be found at https://cuys.org/mentoring

Here are some highlights of the first year’s meetings:

  • Educator and literacy advocate Tre Hadrick summarized surprising truths about the importance of reading.

  • Matt Krouse of Delaware County's District Attorney's office presented on local anti-violence initiatives.

  • Dr Drew Brown, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at University of Delaware, shared research findings and tips on cross-cultural mentor/mentee relationships.

The group also regularly hears from organizations offering relevant grants and service opportunities. Anyone interested in reviewing past meetings, addressing and/or joining the group can connect with CMI at https://cuys.org/mentoring or by emailing jeannine@chesteruplandyouthsoccer.org
