CUYS Selected to Receive Swarthmore’s Collegiate Leadership Competition Prize
The Center for Innovation and Leadership (CIL) at Swarthmore College believes that leadership can be taught and practiced much like riding a bike or playing soccer. With that in mind, the CIL has been partnering with an organization called the Collegiate Leadership Competition (CLC) for the past three years. The CLC are the hosts of a ten-week, comprehensive exploration of leadership education through the use of terminology, discussion questions, and group activities to use to practice leadership with college students. At the end of the 10-weeks, teams of students compete in intercollegiate competition for points based on how well they work together on a team and complete an assigned activity. This past April, the CIL sent two teams to the competition, and one placed 3rd among 30+ teams!
The prize awarded to the team was a donation in their name to an organization of their choice. They chose Chester Upland Youth Soccer for a couple of reasons but two being the connection and love of soccer shared by the group and a Swarthmore alumni connection.
Carl Sveen, Assistant Director said “I had the pleasure of serving as one of the team's coaches and met with them weekly. They were rockstars and worked really well throughout the year together that when it came time for the final competition, it was with no doubt that this group was special. On behalf of the team, we are very excited to make this donation to go towards supporting the amazing work that Chester Upland Youth Soccer is doing to build community through mentorship and soccer.”
