The Haverford School Hosts Clinic for CUYS

The Haverford School's soccer teams hosted a clinic and lunch for the children of Chester Upland Youth Soccer on April 29, supported by a fundraising initiative that has brought in over $1,070 and is still ongoing.

Over 30 children attended, mostly transported on a bus generously underwritten by Boeing, who supports CUYS’ efforts to provide experiences beyond the children’s own neighborhoods. Over 88% of CUYS participants qualify for free or reduced school lunch because of their families’ economic challenges. Chester Upland Youth Soccer provides them with free after-school soccer training, mentorship, nutrition education, social-emotional learning opportunities and engagement in special events like the Haverford School clinic.

“The Haverford team was respectful and full of good role models. It was a very successful day,” noted CUYS Site Director Crystal Brooks, who chaperoned the event.

Keith Cappo, Director of Soccer for The Haverford School, initiated this clinic as part of The Haverford School's tradition of giving back to the community.

"All of our students embrace the opportunity to take part in service," he stated. "This project is especially exciting because it allows us to share our love of soccer with children we may not otherwise have the chance to meet."

One attendee, Jacob, reported that he had a great time, adding, “The thing that I enjoyed the most was when we had to wear the jerseys and they had to try to grab them from us and then we would have to help them get other kids.  I like these activities because I am able to meet other kids and make new friends. Thank you so much for all the opportunities that you give me.”

Participants were invited to take home books graciously provided by the Kara Barnard Youth Literacy Fund.

Given the success of this event, a fall clinic is already being discussed.
